Quickie Review . . . White Cat by Holly Black

It's White Cat!

Synopsis:
Cassel comes from a family of Curse Workers - people who have the power to change your emotions, your memories, your luck, by the slightest touch of their hands. And since curse work is illegal, they're all criminals. Many become mobsters and con artists. But not Cassel. He hasn't got magic, so he's an outsider, the straight kid in a crooked family. You just have to ignore one small detail - he killed his best friend, Lila, three years ago.

Cassel has carefully built up a facade of normalcy, blending into the crowd. But his facade starts to crumble when he finds himself sleepwalking, propelled into the night by terrifying dreams about a white cat that wants to tell him something. He's noticing other disturbing things too, including the strange behavior of his two brothers. They are keeping secrets from him. As Cassel begins to suspect he's part of a huge con game, he must unravel his past and his memories. To find out the truth, Cassel will have to out-con the conmen.

Wow. So I really liked this book a lot! I am very very very into crime shows and crime stories generally. I watch way too many crime shows. A lot of them have to do with murder and the only one I watch that has to do with intelligent crimes is White Collar. Cassel is a con artist and I really enjoy reading about his cons and how he outwits people.

I like that there's a whole supernatural aspect to this crime story. Like the characters have stated in the book, there is an issue with segregation and being treated like criminals due to their special abilities. It's quite interesting to read about the powers, especially with the blowbacks. It brings consequence to their powers, especially to those who have the most powerful of powers. Whatever you do onto others, will be done onto you.

The whole mystery of Cassel and the sleepwalking was something that I thought about, but I didn't expect it to be on such a grand scale.

Anyways, great book!
Happy Reading!
